1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Jim Conway - SGC EX/NM 80

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,938

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Presented is an extremely high grade N173 Old Judge cabinet card of Kansas City pitcher Jim Conway (throwing pose). Jim Conway played only three years in the Major Leagues (1884, 1885, and 1889). He was also a teammate of Hall of Famer “Sliding” Billy Hamilton. The copyright date on the photograph of the card is "1888" but 1889 was Conway’s only year with the Kansas City Cowboys (his last year in the Major Leagues), suggesting that Conway was almost on the team (but did not play for some reason) in 1888 or that this card was actually issued in 1889. Stunning high-grade example, with flawless contrast, and with tremendous detail. The white writing providing Conway's name, position, and team identification is barely legible due to the light foreground (not uncommon for this issue). Perfectly clean on the front and back, with a virtually unimprovable image. Extraordinarily bold and crisp. This is an extremely striking high-grade sample card from this rare nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,938
