1952 Bowman Baseball Prototype Proof Cards (3)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $4,994

Collection of three 1952 Bowman production proof cards. One of the production proof cards measures the same size as the larger-format 1953 Bowmans (2.5 x 3.75 inches) and the other two are the size of a standard 1952 Bowman card (2-1/16 x 3-1/8). Two of the three cards feature the same images which appear on 1952 Bowman cards (the third was not used as the final issued card in the set), but are in black and white, with a slightly glossy surface sheen, and with no player facsimile signature (as appears on the issued 1952 cards). Little is known about these cards other than that they are prototypes somehow related to the production of Bowman baseball cards. All examples of these proofs originated many years ago directly from the files of Bowman's George Moll. It is not known specifically what their purpose was, but they were either early production design samples for 1952 Bowman baseball or an alternative design-format prototype from late in 1952 which led to the larger issued design of 1953 Bowman. Consists of the following proofs: #2 Bobby Thomson (Ex and with handwritten Bowman notations on reverse which read "Bob Thompson New York Giants 1952 #2"), 34 Al Dark (Ex; it is interesting to note the final production card that Bowman issued of Dark was cropped down to his waist and just over his right shoulder), and 174 Harry Brecheen (Ex; it is interesting to note the image on this proof was not used in the final 1952 set). Fascinating trio of these unusual and rare Bowman production design proof cards, each of which is very likely unique. Total 3 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $4,994
