1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Tom Daly

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,880

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely attractive sample card from the 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet series. The offered card features catcher Tom Daly from the Chicago White Stockings in front of an elaborate stadium background. Daly played sixteen seasons in the Major Leagues. He was the only catcher on the Chicago club that traveled with Spalding’s World Tour of 1888-1889. When traded to Brooklyn, he moved to the infield and played mostly second base after 1892. Magnificent photograph, with superb contrast and tremendous detail. This card appears to have been downgraded from Ex or Ex-Mt by SGC due to very minor flaws: a number of small black spots in the background; the mount has light edge and corner wear; and the back has a couple extremely minor red marks, which are of no consequence. The photo is extremely bright and clean. This is a stunning example of one of card collecting’s most substantial and desirable cabinet-card issues. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,880
