1938 R323 Goudey "Heads-Up" Proof Wrapper (Goudey File Copy)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $940

One of the rarest of all 1930s gum wrappers, this wrapper (5 x 6 inches) advertises Goudey's popular 1938 "Heads Up" set of 48 cards. This particular example is an ideal unfolded wrapper originating directly from the "Goudey Find" of 1969, when the files of Goudey were discovered and made available to collectors in the hobby. This is Goudey's archive file copy of this wrapper, which explains how this example has come to survive in such pristine unfolded condition. Most Goudey file copy materials were saved by being stapled into a large album for future reference. Very close examination of this wrapper reveals a pair of very small and clean staple holes in the upper left and right corners and a couple light wrinkles near the bottom (of no consequence and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). The wrapper is otherwise in Ex-Mt condition without a single fold from being used in the packaging of gum and cards (as one could only expect to find with an ideal file copy wrapper). With its colorful red, blue and yellow baseball images, the Heads Up wrapper is not just one of the rarest wrappers of the era but, as one would expect from a wrapper intended to house cards from the classic 1938 Heads Up set, also one of the most impressively designed of all time. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $940
