1937 & 1938 Dixie Lids Baseball Lids and Premiums Collection (23)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175

Collection of 23 items from the 1937 and 1938 Dixie Lids series (fourteen ice cream tops and nine premiums). 1) 1937 Dixie Lids Ice Cream Tops (2): Hubbell (large: Gd-Vg) and Medwick (small: Vg). 2) 1937 Dixie Lids Premiums Near-Complete Baseball Set (3 of 4, missing just Hubbell for completion): Charlie Gehringer (strip of paper loss on the reverse, otherwise Ex), Gabby Hartnett (couple stains on the reverse, otherwise Vg), Joe Medwick (paper residue on the reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex). 3) 1938 Dixie Lids Ice Cream Tops Complete Sport Set Including Both Large and Small Variations (twelve lids, two sizes of each player): two Bob Feller (large: Ex-Mt; small: Vg/Vg-Ex), two Jimmy Foxx (large: Nr/Mt; small: Vg), two Carl Hubbell (large: Vg-Ex; small: Vg), two Wally Moses (large: Gd-Vg; small: Gd-Vg), two Sammy Baugh/football (large: Gd-Vg; small: Vg), two Bronko Nagurski (large: Nr/Mt; small: Vg). 4) 1938 Dixie Lids Premiums Complete Sport Set (6): Bob Feller (ink stamp on the reverse, otherwise Vg), Jimmy Foxx (Vg/Vg-Ex), Carl Hubbell (Vg-Ex/Ex), Wally Moses (Ex), Sammy Baugh/football (Vg), Bronko Nagurski (borders trimmed away, otherwise Vg). The 1937 and 1938 Dixie Lids & Dixie Lids Premiums sets each feature twenty-four subjects, including four baseball players in each set. (Other subjects include various entertainers and two football stars in each set.) The full-color large-format premiums were issued in conjunction with the round 1937 and 1938 Dixie Cup Lid ice-cream top series. These early Dixie Lid sets (both the lids and the premiums) have received very little attention from collectors, and represent one of the best values of all 1930s issues. This is an outstanding and unusually substantial collection of these very scarce and overlooked 1930s food-issue cards and premiums. Total 23 items (14 ice cream tops and 9 premiums). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175
