1934-1949 Large-Format Premium Card Collection Including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig (11)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,645

Eleven unusual premium cards from four different issuers, spanning the years 1934 to 1949, as follows: 1) 1934 R309-1 Goudey Premium. The key card from this very substantial high-quality premium set which was available only by mail in exchange for Goudey Gum wrappers. Printed on thick cardboard stock, R309-1s are designed with a fold-out cardboard easel attachment on the reverse, which allows the card to stand on its own for display. The easel attachment on this example is complete and intact. The card displays minor corner wear, a very tiny chip to the left of Ruth's cap, and two strips of paper remnants along the right and left edge of the reverse. Despite these minor flaws the card has an overall Excellent appearance. Dimensions: 5-1/2 x 9 inches. 2) 1939 R303-B Goudey Hall of Fame Collection (7). Issued in 1939 by Goudey Gum, and catalogued R303-B in the American Card Catalog, this large format (4-3/4 x 7-3/8 inches) set is printed on thin stock and was issued both in black and white, as well as sepia. Offered is an exceptional high-grade collection of seven Hall of Famers, all of the black-and-white variety (the sepia variety are catalogued R303-A). Goudey selected the greatest stars of the day for inclusion in this instructional set (the reverse features playing tips on the finer points of the game). The collection consists of the following: Dickey (Vg-Ex/Ex), DiMaggio (Vg-Ex), Feller (Vg-Ex), Gomez (Vg-Ex/Ex), Greenberg (Vg), Ott (Vg-Ex), and Vaughan (Vg-Ex). This is a sharp collection of R303-B Goudey premiums, clean and crisp across the board, and it should be stressed that all have an Excellent or better appearance (those graded less than Ex have only an extremely minor flaw that is not immediately apparent, perhaps a tiny crease). For years this has been one of the most overlooked of all 1930s gum issues because grading companies simply did not have holders for this set, but that has very recently changed with the introduction of larger-format holders by SGC which now allow for professional grading and encapsulation of this issue. 3) 1949 Leaf Premiums (2). Two very scarce 1949 Leaf premiums featuring Lou Gehrig (Nr/Mt-Mt) and Walter Johnson (Vg) which, as noted on the reverse of the regular cards, were available for ten Leaf Gum wrappers each. 4) 1934 Washington Times Babe Ruth Premium. This unusual two-page premium (7 x 11 inches) was issued by the Washington Times newspaper to celebrate Babe Ruth's last game of the 1934 season at Clark Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. On the day of the game Ruth was given a testimonial signed by several thousand fans including President Franklin Roosevelt. The black-and-white image on the front displays the legendary “Bambino” in his classic swing-thru pose. The inside pages display a copy of the testimonial presented to Ruth. It is believed that the premium was distributed to fans at the game. The reverse of the premium features an ad for the Washington Times. The premium is in Vg condition. Eleven rather unusual large-format cards, two featuring Babe Ruth, and one with Lou Gehrig. Total 11 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
