1933 R333 DeLong Gum Complete Set (24)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,288

Extremely attractive complete set of this classic 1930s prewar gum issue, entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC, highlighted by a particularly outstanding and strong example of key card #7 Lou Gehrig (SGC VG/EX 50). DeLongs have always held a special place in the hearts of collectors. The small size of the set, its relative rarity compared to most others card sets of the era, its unique dimensions and design, and its status as a “one-year issue” all combine to make DeLongs one of the most highly regarded of all 1930s issues among serious collectors. The SGC grades are as follows: Five VG/EX 50: #7 Gehrig (HOF, bright and clean, with bold colors, light, even corner wear, centered slightly to the left, great looking card), 15, 16, 19 Hafey (HOF), and 21 Foxx (HOF). Sixteen VG 40: #1 McManus, 2 Simmons (HOF), 4 Terry (HOF), 5 Gehringer (HOF), 6 Cochrane (HOF), 8 Cuyler (HOF), 9, 11 Lindstrom (HOF), 12 Traynor (HOF), 13 Maranville (HOF), 14 Gomez (HOF), 18, 20, 22 Klein (HOF), 23 Grove (HOF), and 24 Goslin (HOF, last card in set). Two GOOD 30: #3 and 10 O'Doul. One FAIR 20: #17 Martin. As is usually the case, vintage cards which are graded in the Good to Very Good range by SGC are usually extremely attractive cards. That is certainly the case with this complete set, which presents a rarely offered relatively affordable alternative to a higher-grade set, yet without sacrificing the visual qualities that make the DeLong Gum set so appealing, and including particularly strong examples of key cards Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx. This set is the result of a tremendous amount of work, with great thought given to overall eye-appeal and value. This is a very clean, attractive, and consistently graded set of these 1930s classics. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $4,989. Total 24 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,288
