1933 R319 Goudey Gum Near-Complete Set (222 of 240)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,050

25% range from Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a few slightly better), 55% range from Vg to Vg-Ex, 20% lesser grades (many of these lesser-graded cards actually have an Excellent or better appearance, and have been appropriately downgraded due to having a very slight trim). This near-complete set of 1933 Goudey Gum includes 222 of the 240 cards in the set, and is missing three of the four Ruths and both Gehrigs, which naturally makes the near-complete set far more affordable than if these five cards were included. The near-set is highlighted by an exceptionally strong example of card #223 Dean (PSA EX-MT 6), one of the four Babe Ruths (#53 SGC GOOD 30), and fifty-two additional Hall of Famers. The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC and one card was already graded by PSA. Keys: #1 Bengough (Gd), 2 Vance (Vg), 7 Lyons (Gd), 19 Dickey (SGC EX 60), 22 Traynor (possible slight trim, o/w Vg-Ex), 23 Cuyler (Vg), 25 Waner (Vg), 29 Foxx (Vg), 31 Lazzeri (Vg), 35 Simmons (Vg), 42 Collins (Ex), 44 Bottomley (Vg), 47 Manush (Vg), 49 Frisch (Vg), 53 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30, nice clean card, no creases, a little corner wear and slightly off center as is common for this card), 56 Ruffing (slight trim, o/w Ex), 60 Hoyt (slight trim, o/w Vg), 63 Cronin (Vg-Ex), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex), 73 Haines (Vg), 74 Rixey (Vg-Ex), 76 Cochrane (slight trim, o/w Ex), 79 Faber (trimmed, o/w Vg-Ex), 89 Speaker (Gd-Vg), 102 Jackson (Vg), 103 Combs (Vg), 107 Manush (Vg), 109 Cronin (trimmed, o/w Ex), 110 Goslin (slight trim, o/w Ex), 117 Maranville (Vg), 125 Terry (trimmed, o/w Ex), 127 Ott (trimmed, o/w Ex), 128 Klein (slight trim, o/w Ex), 133 Lindstrom (slight trim, o/w Vg-Ex), 134 Rice (Vg-Ex), 138 Pennock (Vg-Ex), 147 Durocher (trimmed, o/w Ex), 154 Foxx (SGC VG/EX 50), 158 Berg (slight trim, o/w Vg-Ex), 164 Waner (slight trim, o/w Vg-Ex), 165 Sewell (slight trim, o/w Ex), 168 Goslin (trimmed, o/w Ex), 187 Manush (slight trim, o/w Vg), 188 Hornsby (Vg-Ex), 189 Cronin (slight trim, o/w Vg), 194 Averill (slight trim, o/w Ex), 197 Ferrell (slight trim, o/w Vg-Ex), 202 Hartnett (trimmed, o/w Ex), 211 Wilson (trimmed, o/w Ex), 216 Gomez (slight trim, o/w Ex), 220 Grove (trimmed, o/w Ex), 222 Gehringer (possible slight trim, o/w Vg), 223 Dean (PSA EX-MT 6), 229 Vaughan (slight trim, o/w Ex), 230 Hubbell (slight trim, o/w Ex), 234 Hubbell (slight trim, o/w Ex), and 240 Schumacher (trimmed, o/w Vg-Ex). The following eighteen card numbers are missing for completion (with Hall of Famers also noted by name): #3, 20 Terry, 46, 50, 51, 87, 92 Gehrig, 104, 106 Lajoie, 112, 115, 119 Hornsby, 144 Ruth, 149 Ruth, 160 Gehrig, 181 Ruth, 207 Ott, 221. This collection of 222 different 1933 Goudeys (missing only eighteen cards including #106 Lajoie) has many highlights and is an extremely attractive near-complete set of this classic 1930s gum-card issue. Total 222 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $7,050
