1922 E120 American Caramel - Series of 240 Near-Complete Set (189 of 240)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

Rarely offered low- to mid-grade near-complete set of 1922 E120 American Caramel (Series 240) cards includes 189 of the 240 cards in the set, highlighted by twenty Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. 20% grade Vg or better (includes a few Vg-Ex and Ex), 60% range from Fr to Gd, and 20% lesser. Missing the following fifty-one cards for completion: Alexander, Bancroft, Barnes, Barnhart, Betts, Carey, E. Collins, Coveleski, Crane, Dugan, Gardner, Gharrity, Glazner, O. Grimes, Hauser, Heathcoat, Heilmann, Hooper, Hornsby, Hoyt, Jacobson, S. Jones, Kelly, Mays, McHenry, Meadows, B. Meusel, B. Miller, L. Miller, Morrison, Neale, Oeschger, O’Farrell, Peters, Pillette, Pipp, Pratt, Rawlings, Ruether, Robertson, Schang, Sisler, Tierney, Traynor, Vangilder, C. Walker, Wambsganss, Ward, Wheat, Wood, and Youngs. The E120 American Caramel Company set issued in 1922 is universally recognized as the classic set from the 1920s. The E120 set’s 240 cards make it the only comprehensive set of the era and its striking design make it one of the most attractive baseball card sets of any era. The set features fifteen members from each of the sixteen Major League teams. All the players are pictured in full-length poses. The National Leaguers are printed in a green tone; the American Leaguers in a sepia tone. This near-set is remarkably clean and attractive, and extremely desirable even in its technically overall modest condition. Included are twenty Hall of Famers: Baker (Pr), Cobb (two strips of clear tape on top and bottom, otherwise Vg), Faber (Gd-Vg), Frisch (Fr), Goslin (paper loss on back, otherwise Ex), Grimes (Fr), Haines (Gd), Harris (Pr), Hartnett (35/65 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), Johnson (Vg), Maranville (Vg), Marquard (back damage, otherwise Ex), Pennock (Ex-Mt), Rice (Vg), Rixey (Gd-Vg), Roush (Fr), Ruth (two strips of clear tape on top and bottom, otherwise Fr-Gd), Schalk (Gd), Sewell (Vg), and Speaker (Pr). E120s are almost never found in set or even near-set form. They could only be collected one card at a time by buying packs of American Caramel. They were never offered by the company in complete-set form, and with 240 cards to collect a complete set was a great challenge even in 1922. Assembling a set today, while theoretically possible, would be even a greater challenge and might be considered somewhat impractical by most collectors. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of 189 different cards (out of 240 in the set) of this all-time classic 1920s baseball-card issue. Total 189 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,994
