1923 V117 Maple Crispette Near-Complete Set (28 of 30) Including Ruth, Cobb, Johnson

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,050

Rarely offered near-complete set of 1923 V117 Maple Crispettes including 28 of the 30 cards comprising this rare Canadian candy issue, highlighted by Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. Missing only #15 Stengel (a virtually impossible rarity in the V117 set) and 25 McKechnie for completion. Six cards are graded Vg-Ex, eight are Vg, twelve are Gd, and two are lesser. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #2 Traynor (Vg-Ex), 3 Schalk (Gd), 4 Collins (Vg), 7 Hoyt (Gd), 8 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30, a very pleasing example with no creases and square corners, downgraded for two tiny spots of paper loss by Ruth's eye and on his ear), 12 Sewell (Vg), 19 Bottomley (Vg-Ex), 21 Harris (Gd), 22 Cobb (SGC VG 40), 27 Pennock (Gd), 28 Roush (Vg-Ex), and 30 Johnson (SGC VG 40). According to the backs, a complete set of 30 cards could be redeemed by mail for valuable prizes (gloves, bats, balls, etc.). This issue was long thought to be complete at 29 cards until a discovery in the early 1990s of card #15 Stengel, which was obviously short printed to limit Maple Crispettes’ exposure to the prize redemption offer as detailed on the back of each card (complete sets could be exchanged for prizes) and possibly also to encourage more sales. Total of 28 of the 30 cards (representing what is essentially a complete set minus one card, not counting Stengel) of this rare issue which includes some of the most difficult-to-find cards of many great Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 28 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $7,050
