1913 WG5 "National Game" Cards Complete Set (54)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406

Presented is a newly-discovered and exceptional high-grade complete set of all fifty-two 1913 "National Game" cards, accompanied by the original rules card and score card, for a total of 54 cards. This game-card set is comprised of forty-three different individual players and nine action photos. "The National Game" cards are nearly identical in design to the "Tom Barker Baseball" card set except for the different back design, which is in red and features advertising for "The National Game." All the greatest stars of the era are represented, including Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, Cy Young, and many more. We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. The SGC grades are as follows: One MINT 96: Speaker. Two NM/MT+ 92: Baker and Johnson. One NM/MT 88: Cobb. One NM 84: Jackson. One EX 60: Lajoie. One VG/EX 50: Wagner. One VG 40: Mathewson (Ex-Mt appearance, downgraded due to minute surface paper loss in lower left corner). The balance of the cards are similar in grade to the selection of eight SGC-graded cards. Additional Hall of Famers include Alexander, Bender, Bresnahan, Chance, Clarke, Crawford, Evers, Griffith, Huggins, Jennings, Mack, Marquard, McGraw, Tinker, Walsh, and Young. These sets usually come either in virtually perfect condition or with significant wear from use as intended. This is an unusual set in that most cards are very sharp, almost all ranging from Ex to Nr/Mt or better, but the set includes a few cards here or there that appear Ex or better at a glance but technically grade lower. This is a stunning and very consistent high-grade set that represents an outstanding value, compared to an even higher-grade set and perhaps compared to all other 1910-era baseball sets as well. Also included is the original four-page instruction booklet that has accompanied the set since 1913 (interestingly it is the instruction booklet for the related Tom Barker set). The equivalent SMR value for just the eight SGC-graded cards (not including the additional 46 cards) is $3,722. Total 54 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
