1911 E94 George Close Candy Complete Set (30)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $21,150

Exceptionally rare complete set of E94, highlighted by ten Hall of Famers, and including two "Blome's Chocolates" overprint advertising backs (Speaker and Wagner). This 30-card set was issued in 1911 by the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass. Advanced collectors of "E" cards will immediately recognize the caramel-card set designated as "E94" as a thorn in their sides. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most elusive. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. The set is comprised almost exclusively of Hall of Famers and stars. We have selected eleven cards from the set to be graded and encapsulated by SGC: Three VG-EX 50: Austin, Devore, and Grant. Three VG 40: Ty Cobb, Kleinow, and Cy Young. Four GOOD 30: Johnny Evers, Nap Lajoie, Magee, and Tris Speaker ("Blome's Chocolates" overprint). One FAIR 20: " Hans" Wagner ("Blome's Chocolates" overprint). The remaining nineteen cards grade as follows: Thirteen Gd (Bates, Bescher, Byrne, Sam Crawford, Davis, Devlin, Doolan, Dougherty, Hughie Jennings, Leach, Moore, Murray, and Turner), and six in lesser grades (Frank Chance, Ed Cicotte [Black Sox], Lake, Lobert, Lord, and John McGraw). The cards in this set are in very pleasing but circulated condition. This is typical for caramel cards in general, which of course were issued with candy, one card per pack, and which tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. The equivalent SMR value for just the eleven graded cards (not including the nineteen ungraded cards) is $10,110. Total 30 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000+. SOLD FOR $21,150
