1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Hal Chase

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $11,163

Graded EX 60 by SGC. M110 Sporting Life cabinet cards are among the most impressive and desirable cards of the era. This auction includes the complete M110 set, assembled and presented by the same consignor, with each card offered individually. Offered is a magnificent high-grade sample from this legendary set of early New York star first baseman Hal Chase. Because there are only six players to the set (Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, Lajoie, Chance, and Chase), Sporting Life had the luxury to include only players they considered to be especially noteworthy stars. Ninety-five years later its choices appear to have withstood the test of time, with the possible exception of Hal Chase. Chase was, in fact, a major star of the day, but his involvement with gambling and unsavory characters undermined his legend, and ensured that he would forever remain a "non-Hall of Famer." The card has light, even wear to the corners. The back of the card has some very light shading along the right edge, but is otherwise perfectly clean with flawless bold blue text. This is a very attractive high-grade example from one of card collecting’s rarest, most condition-sensitive, and most highly prized early twentieth-century cabinet-card issues. Dimensions: 5-5/8 x 7-1/2 inches. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $11,163
