1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinet Hans Wagner

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $10,575

T5 Pinkerton cabinet of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner. This is a magnificent example of one of the most impressive of all Wagner cards. This card of Honus Wagner also has a special significance to the legend of the T206 Honus Wagner card, as it is a tobacco-card issue (and, in fact, is even rarer than the more famous and valuable T206 Wagner). T5 Pinkerton cabinets are among the rarest of all 1910-era tobacco issues. These cabinet cards were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with cigarettes produced by the Pinkerton Tobacco Co. Each T5 premium card is designed with a real photo (3-3/8 x 5-1/2 inches) affixed to a thick cardboard cabinet-style mount (4-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). Two poses of Wagner were issued in T5: batting and fielding. This outstanding example of Honus Wagner, in a fielding pose, is bright, fresh, and clean, with a natural light waviness on the top left and right edges related to being affixed to the mount along the top as made, and slightly miscut along the bottom border of the photograph. The mount has just a hint of light corner wear. The reverse is perfectly clean. Encapsulated as Authentic by PSA. PSA apparently does not put numerical grades on T5 Pinkerton cabinets (they have encapsulated thirty-two examples to date, all as "Authentic"); we have not examined this card outside of its holder but it appears to us to be in strong Excellent condition. This is an exceptionally attractive example of one of the best of all Honus Wagner cards, and would be a significant addition to any serious Hall of Fame or prewar-card collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $10,575
