1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Near-Complete PSA-Graded Set (48 of 50): PSA Registry Set #7

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $15,275

Extremely high grade world-class near-complete set of 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders (48 of 50 cards), all graded and encapsulated by PSA. Missing just one Hall of Famer (#13 Chance/Evers) and one common (#4 Barrett/McGlynn) for completion. This is an extraordinary high-grade near-complete set of this classic tobacco issue. This set is listed on the PSA Set Registry. It is the seventh-highest graded set, with an average grade of 5.92. Twenty cards range from Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, twenty range from Ex to Ex-Mt, and eight are lesser. The eight less than Excellent PSA-graded cards in this set provide a relatively easy opportunity for replacements, and increasing the already extraordinary grade point average. Also, most cards which received lesser grades are great-looking cards that appear Ex at a glance, and have been downgraded only due to the minor flaws which are so common to the issue. The thin stock on which T201s are printed makes them especially susceptible to very light corner rounding and surface wrinkles. In the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are referenced from the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. The PSA grades are as follows: Six NM-MT 8: #6 Bender/Oldring (HOF), 7 Bergen/Wheat (HOF), 11 Brown/Hofman (HOF), 22 (MC), 26, and 50 (last card in set). Fourteen NM 7: #2 Baker/Collins (HOF), 12 Byrne/Clarke (HOF), 15 Cicotte/Thoney ("Black Sox"), 20, 21, 23 Dougherty/Lord, 28 Lajoie/Falkenberg (HOF), 30, 36, 39 Summers/Jennings (HOF), 40 Johnson/Street (HOF), 43, 44, and 45. Seven EX-MT 6: #9 Bresnahan/Huggins (HOF), 10 Mathewson/Bridwell (HOF; it is interesting to note that Mathewson's name is misspelled "Matthewson" on the front and correctly spelled on the back), 16, 18, 19, 25, and 49. Thirteen EX 5: #3, 5, 8, 14 Chase/Sweeney, 17 Crawford/Cobb (HOF), 29, 32 Gardner/Speaker (HOF), 33, 35, 38, 41, 42 Lake/Wallace (HOF), and 48 Payne/Walsh (HOF). Five VG-EX 4: #1, 24, 27, 31, and 34. One VG 3: #47. Two GOOD 2: #37 and 46 McCarthy/McGinnity (HOF). Exceptionally crisp, clean, and attractive complete set of Mecca Double Folders, one of the best sets we have ever seen, and literally one of the best sets in the world. The technical PSA grades of the set are very strong, as can be seen, but as is often the case with T201s, this set clearly has an appearance that is superior to even the already impressive assigned grades. This is a strong set! The T201 Mecca Double Folders set includes twenty Hall of Famers and is arguably one of the best values of all 1910 tobacco-card issues. The total SMR value for the assigned grades is $25,643. Total 48 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++. SOLD FOR $15,275
