Two 1909-1911 T206 Bud Sharpe - Shappe Variation - RARE! (Two Different Ad Backs)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,763

Two examples of the 1909-1911 T206 White Border "Shappe" printing variation of Bud Sharpe, Newark, one with a Piedmont reverse, the other with an El Principe de Gales advertising back. This is one of the rarest of all T206 caption variations. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and unusual cards associated with the landmark T206 set. The "Shappe" variation card is a legitimate variation error card that has been checklisted in the Standard Catalog. The “Shappe” variation error card is defined by the misspelling of Sharpe's name on the card’s caption. This caption variation was apparently caused by a printing plate error affecting the typeset of Sharpe's name on only a very limited print run. Offered are two examples of this extreme T206 rarity, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. 1) EX/NM 80. The card is centered to the top (approximately 20/80 T/B), with only the lightest hint of wear on the corners, a striking red background, and flawless registration. Piedmont advertisement on the reverse. 2) VG 40. Well centered, with even corner wear, perfect registration, and a couple light creases above his head. El Principe De Gales advertisement. Either one of these two cards would serve as a significant addition to any complete T206 collection. Because of their extreme rarity, there is no consensus on the value of this card. We are confident the auction process will provide clarity. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,763
