1909-1911 T206 White Borders Ty Cobb Collection (2)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,763

Two of the four classic poses of Ty Cobb from the T206 White Borders series, each very attractive but technically low-grade cards. This lot includes graded examples of the red background portrait and bat-off-shoulder pose, both with Sweet Caporal advertising backs. 1) The red-background card is one of the great classics of the set. This is a very attractive low-grade example with a strong portrait, perfect centering, even corner wear, and a light horizontal crease through the “D” insignia on Cobb’s Detroit uniform. This is a solid Vg card, technically downgraded by PSA due to light staining on the back and a tiny tear at the bottom border, but is a very attractive card. Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. 2) The striking bat-off-shoulder pose is arguably the most attractive of Cobb's four poses in the T206 set. Hall of Famer Ty Cobb is captured in an intimidating batting pose, set against a deep, rich colorful background. This is a sharp-looking card: clean both front and back, with a flawless surface, square corners displaying just a hint of wear (predominately the upper left), well centered, with extremely vibrant colors, and perfect registration. This is a very attractive card with an image that really "pops." It is graded "Authentic" (as opposed to numerically) by SGC due to evidence of a slight trim. The trim is very subtle; it is not easily identified with certainty when viewed in the holder. (We assume it is the top border, though we have never seen the card outside of the holder so we're unable to be certain.) This is a very attractive and relatively affordable pair of classic original Ty Cobb tobacco cards, representing a potentially outstanding vintage card value. Total 2 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,763
