1909 E90-1 American Caramel Addie Joss - Rare Pitching Pose

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,233

Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only two examples graded at this level by PSA, with just two examples graded higher! Extraordinary high-grade example of Hall of Famer Addie Joss in the rare pitching pose from the highly desirable E90-1 American Caramel series. Similar to the Cracker Jack of Mathewson that was issued in two poses (though one in the #144 set and the other in the #176 set), Joss is a key Hall of Famer that has two poses in the E90-1 set. The portrait pose is relatively common. The horizontal pitching pose is incredibly rare, and is one of the key extreme rarities of the entire E90-1 set. We believe the E90-1 horizontal pitching pose of Joss is rarer than even Joe Jackson in this set, and the PSA Population Report supports this theory very strongly: only twenty-four rare Joss horizontals in all grades have ever been graded, versus a total of fifty-one Joe Jacksons. E90-1 American Caramel is one of the most challenging of all caramel-card sets to complete, specifically because the set includes a number of extremely rare cards such as the horizontal Addie Joss pitching pose card. When we see near-complete sets of E90-1, both Joss (horizontal pose) and Jackson are almost always missing. Joss is one of the most desirable of all E90-1 rarities, one of the most desirable of all Hall of Famers in the set, and, of course, is also one of the rarest and most desirable of all cards of Addie Joss. This is a spectacular example in Excellent condition. For an E90-1 caramel card, PSA EX 5 is all the more impressive a grade, as cards from this set are almost always found in lower grades. This is the highest-grade rare E90-1 Joss we have ever offered. Bright and clean, both front and back, with vibrant colors, no caramel stains, and with just a touch of wear to the corners (predominately lower left). Centered to the bottom approximately 75/25 T/B. This is an exceptional example of a key Hall of Famer rarity from the most popular caramel-card set of the era. We do not believe the extreme rarity and value of some cards in the E90-1 set, including the rare horizontal pitching pose of Joss, are accurately reflected by the values currently listed in SMR. The SMR value of the common portrait pose of Joss in PSA EX 5 is $1,200. The SMR value for the rare E90-1 Joss horizontal pose in the assigned grade is $2,000. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
