1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb Portrait "Red Hindu" Back

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $38,188

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Presented is one of tobacco-card collecting's great treasures: The T206 Ty Cobb with the extremely rare Red Hindu back. The red portrait pose is the only T206 Cobb pose that is known with advertising for Hindu cigarettes in red on the back. Few Red Hindu cards are known to exist, let alone examples featuring a key Hall of Famer such as Ty Cobb. The total checklist of confirmed T206 Red Hindu back examples to date is just forty-six different subjects. Even a common player Red Hindu back sample is extremely rare. This T206 Ty Cobb card is the most desirable of all T206 Red Hindu back cards. This is an astonishing rarity that is noteworthy to even the most advanced T206 collectors and scholars. The Red Hindu Cobb, by any measure, is one of the best front and rare-back combinations that can possibly exist in the entire T206 set. It is also fascinating to note that the T206 Red Hindu Ty Cobb is many times rarer than even the famous T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb Tobacco advertising on the reverse, of which approximately twelve examples are known, or the Uzit back Cobb, which is also an incredible rarity. In fact, this is the only Ty Cobb Red Hindu example we have ever seen. It may not be the only surviving example, but it is close. We have heard of one other but have not seen it.

The T206 set is unique in that it offers so many dimensions of interest and intrigue to collectors, and is a fascinating field of collecting and study unto itself. It is the single most popular vintage-card issue among collectors. Some of the many elements and topics relating to the T206 set that fascinate collectors include the many color variations, rare cards, scarce cards, team variations, Wagner, Plank, Doyle, Magie, printer's scraps, miscuts, Cobb with Cobb back cards, Southern Leaguers, great stars, great artwork, great era, Hall of Famers, and, of course, rare backs. Interest in T206s is never going out of style, and one of the "dream cards" that is recognized by all is the T206 Ty Cobb with a Red Hindu back. There is only one PSA VG-EX 4 example. This is it.

This card has been well known for many years. It has quietly changed hands several times over the years but has not been offered at auction in ten years. (The only time we saw it offered at auction was in the 1990s; it sold for approximately $6,000, an extraordinary price at the time.) The evaluating of dream combinations of T206 fronts and backs, like the valuing of any card, is an art. There is no right answer. Whatever its value, the Red Hindu Cobb will always be one of the ultimate desirable rarities of the T206 set. This card has a particularly strong eye appeal, both front and back. This is a gorgeous card. Cobb's image is perfectly focused against the striking red background. The card is bright and clean, with light, even wear to the corners, no creases, and centered slightly to the right (approximately 60/40). The reverse is also perfectly clean. The Red Hindu print is flawless and bold. This is an exceptional example one of the most significant of all tobacco-card rarities, and one of the premier T206 rare-back cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $38,188
