1902-1911 W600 Sporting Life Hall of Fame Cabinet Card Collection (7)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $12,925

Collection of seven W600 Sporting Life cabinets comprised exclusively of Hall of Famers, including Mathewson and Young, each graded and encapsulated by SGC: 1) Mordecai Brown (FAIR 20, bright and crisp with an Vg-Ex/Ex to Excellent appearance on the front, with just a little corner wear, but downgraded to FAIR 20 due to ink notations and two small areas of surface paper loss on the back, great-looking card; Brown is the highlight of the lot in terms of overall appearance, even though two other cards in this lot have been graded higher by SGC); 2) John Chesbro (VG 40, heavy age spotting front and back and a chip of paper loss near the bottom right of the image area. We grade this card slightly harsher than SGC at Good); 3) Nap Lajoie (POOR 10, tack hole at the top border and three chipped corners, otherwise Gd); 4) Christy Mathewson (GOOD 30); 5) Robert Wallace (FAIR 20, with many pinpoint age spots, and various minor flaws to reverse including part of a stamp affixed); 6) Vic Willis (POOR 10, heavy stains on the front and back, not affecting portrait image area); and 7) Cy Young (heavily rounded corners, ink notations on the reverse, still a very nice looking card for the grade). W600s are one of the rarest sets from the early part of the century, and one of the most substantial and well-made card sets ever produced. W600 Hall of Famers, in particular, have always been highly prized by serious collectors. This is a very rare assembly of seven low-grade Hall of Famers from this extraordinary issue, including several of the most desirable Hall of Famers in the entire set. Also included is a 1909 advertising flyer featuring illustrations of W600 cabinet cards of Wagner, Mathewson, Young, and Lajoie, as well as a checklist of the cabinet cards available and instructions on how to order them directly from Sporting Life. The reverse provides a checklist and ordering information for the W601 Sporting Life team composite display print series, illustrated by a W601 of the Pittsburg Nationals (some separations along the natural fold lines, overall in Good condition). Total 8 items (7 cards and 1 advertisement). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $12,925
