1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Fred Pfeffer - Retired

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Highest-graded example! This is an especially fascinating card in the Mayo set. Pfeffer was issued in two variations. This example lists Pfeffer as "Pfeffer: Retired." When Pfeffer's card was first issued by Mayo, it listed him as "Pfeffer: 2nd. B.," but when he played only eleven games in the 1895 season, Mayo changed Pfeffer's position status from "Second Base" to "Retired." He actually returned to play another two seasons in the Major Leagues with several clubs in 1896 and 1897. This is a very attractive card with some light edge and corner wear, a bright, crisp portrait image, and centered slightly to the bottom left. The reverse has light edge wear along the top, and otherwise is perfectly clean. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
