1889 N172 Old Judge Amos Rusie

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. 1889 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Amos Rusie (rookie card) with the Indianapolis Hoosiers in a batting pose. This is an unusual pose in that Rusie, of course, was one of the greatest pitchers of the nineteenth century. Amos Rusie, also known as the "Indianapolis Thunderbolt," personified power pitching in the 1890s. He was the principal reason the pitcher's mound was moved back from 50 feet to the present 60 feet 6 inches in 1893. He came to the New York Giants, after a season with his hometown Indianapolis team, to fill a gap created by the defection of several Giants to the Players' League. By the time the rebellion of the star players ended after a single season, Rusie was already well established. In their absence he had led the league with 36 wins and in winning percentage and strikeouts. Rusie retired prematurely in 1898 after suffering a torn muscle in his shoulder. Still under contract with the Giants after his "retirement," he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for a young pitcher by the name of Christy Mathewson. Rusie tried a comeback but failed; Mathewson went on to win 373 games. This is a magnificent card dating from the rookie year of Amos Rusie, one of the nineteenth century's greatest stars. Bright and clean, with excellent photo quality, no creases, and even corner wear (a little more pronounced in the upper right). The reverse is clean. Copyright dated 1889. This card, a highlight of a newly discovered original-owner collection consigned to this auction, is a very strong example of one of the key Hall of Famer cards in the N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
