1894 N142 Duke Cabinet William Nash

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,287.50

Graded VG 40 by SGC. This newly discovered example of William Nash is part of a collection of three N142 Duke cabinet cards which was saved by a Pennsylvania family since the time of issue. Duke cabinet cards are among the rarest, most impressive, and desirable of all pre-1900 issues. They are also one of the few full-color pre-1900 issues, and the only full color pre-1900 cabinet card issue. In addition, they were issued in an era (mid-1890s) in which there were very few baseball card sets, making this issue all the more significant to collectors. There are only four ballplayers in this set. Offered is a magnificent sample from this legendary set of early Boston star third baseman William Nash. Upon close inspection the card has virtually no edge or corner wear, a light hint of a stain (which is extremely minor) near the top right and lower right corners, and a barely detectable small light crease in the lower left corner. Flawlessly bold colors. Some light shading on the blank reverse. Aside from the extremely minor faults, this card displays an overall Excellent appearance. This is an outstanding example of one of card collecting's rarest and most highly prized nineteenth-century cabinet card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
