1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb - Red Background

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $705.00

Graded GOOD 2 by BVG. Stunning modestly graded T206 Ty Cobb from the Beckett T206 Find. We were struck by how great this card looks, even though it is only graded Good, and when we realized that we didn't have a perfect lot in which to put this card (or the four fish cards that were also in the find), we thought these five cards would make an ideal modest-value offering from this famous collection. The T206 portrait of Ty Cobb set against a brilliant red background is considered by many collectors to be his single most classic card. It is one of the most recognizable and popular of all vintage baseball cards. This is a bright, crisp, clean, medium-grade example, with four square corners, outstanding color, perfect registration, and an extremely bold red background. The card has a single, horizontal crease that runs across the card through Cobb’s chin, which is really not that distracting because the flaw is overshadowed by all the great qualities this card has to offer. It was downgraded from Excellent by BVG solely due to this light crease and the very slight miscut along the bottom edge. The Sweet Caporal ad on the reverse is centered to the left and very clean. This example illustrates that even today a collector, with patience, can still obtain many of the most noteworthy cards in outstanding condition on a relatively modest budget. In the "old days" many collectors would have graded this card Vg-Ex and no one would have taken exception. The four T58 Fish Series tobacco cards, each graded by BVG, are also included: Red Snapper (VG-EX 4), Sea robin (VG-EX 4), Sunfish (VG 3), and Swordfish (FAIR 1.5). The fish cards might not be very valuable, but like a bench warmer on the 1927 Yankees, these four cards have a connection with greatness, and were discovered with the Beckett Wagner in one of the most exciting vintage-card finds in recent years. Total 5 cards (T206 Cobb and four T58 Fish cards). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $705.00
