1934 Goudey Complete Set (96) Ex-Bill Haber Collection

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $7,637.50

Presented is a 1934 Goudey complete set - direct from the "good old days of collecting." Years ago, this set was part of the Bill Haber collection. For those who are not familiar with this name, Bill Haber was one of the truly great collectors from years past. He was one of the first collectors that was a scholar of the game first, and this led him to collect many sets such as Zeenuts and E107s when few collectors appreciated their great significance. Many are familiar with Bill Haber because he worked for Topps, and for decades his job was to write the backs of the baseball cards. So even if you did not personally know this great gentleman, if you are reading this you have probably appreciated his work over the years. Bill had lots of cards from various deals and sometimes pared his collection down, trading off more recent cards for older, rarer issues. In the old days collectors did a lot of trading. Some twenty plus years ago Bill Haber and a younger Robert Lifson (future president of REA) made a deal involving some great rarities Bill was looking for, and Lifson wound up with this 1934 Goudey set, which for Haber was expendable because it was "too new" and did not have the obscure rarely-seen-on-cards players that Haber most enjoyed. Lifson put it away exactly as Bill Haber gave it to him, in the large-format plastic covered pages, with cards mounted with clear plastic photo corners. This is the form in which these cards are still presented. They looked great over twenty years ago and they look great now. The set has remained untouched since the day of that deal, in the parking lot of a convention ages ago, back when that's where most collectors met. At the time this set was considered very high grade, but by today's standards, it is a very respectable medium-grade set. The cards have never been taken out of the pages so the grades provided below are apparent grades, but we are confident that there are no back-damage issues, and the set could easily be removed from the pages if desired. We think the set looks tremendous exactly as is, and Robert Lifson is happy to offer the set in exactly the form that he received it some twenty-five years ago from Bill Haber. Encapsulated cards are great, and these cards could always be taken out and graded, but there is something special about a set of vintage cards such as this being offered neatly mounted on pages with photo corner mounts, exactly as kept by the most serious collectors of years ago. Usually, when sets are sold by REA from great old-time collections, we have to break them out of their pages if mounted and get many (or all) cards graded. In this rare case, we have the ability to offer them as is. It may be a little unorthodox, we may not maximize the value on this set, but we do get to reminisce about the old days of the hobby and pay tribute to Bill Haber, one of the great collecting legends of the field that rarely gets recognized. And that's got to be worth something. Se t Description: Complete set of the 1934 Goudey "Lou Gehrig Says..." series, so named because the text on the backs are written, according to the cards, by Lou Gehrig. Each card has been neatly mounted into album pages with corner mounts. Without reference to the backs, which are believed to be without any problems but have never been examined, most of the cards range in condition from Very Good to Excellent (averaging Vg-Ex), with a few exceptions. Keys: #1 Foxx (Vg-Ex/Ex, beautiful card just shy of Ex due to corner wear), 2 Cochrane (Ex), 6 Dean (Vg-Ex), 7 Durocher (Ex), 10 Klein (Ex), 11 Waner (Vg-Ex/Ex), 12 Hubbell (pencil on front, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), 13 Frisch (Ex), 18 Manush (Ex), 19 Grove (erasure mark, otherwise Ex), 21 Terry (Vg-Ex/Ex), 22 Vaughan (Ex), 23 Gehringer (Ex), 27 Appling (Ex), 34 Hafey (Ex-Mt), 35 Lombardi (Ex-Mt), 37 Gehrig (Gd-Vg due to pencil mark on front, still a nice looking card with bright colors), 61 Gehrig (Fr-Gd/Gd), 62 Greenberg (Ex). The condition of the 24 rare high numbers (73-96) is as follows: thirteen cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex including #94 Rolfe, ten cards range from Gd to Vg including #90 Cuyler, and one card is lesser (#96 DeShong). Very attractive and beautifully presented complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by twenty Hall of Famers (including two Lou Gehrigs), and 24 scarce high number series cards. Total 96 cards.
