1940 Play Ball Complete Set (240)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,112.50

Presented is a rarely offered and extremely consistent complete set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc., with tremendous eye appeal throughout. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. This is a very impressive and fairly high grade set. 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set, and the rarity of complete sets has been underappreciated. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, in part due to its extraordinary break value, and the inclusion of several particularly high-value key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson, two of which are in Vg-Ex condition in this set). This is a beautiful set. We have selected six cards to be graded by PSA. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (rejected by PSA for being altered, possibly sheet-cut, Vg appearance), 6 Gomez (Vg-Ex), 7 Dickey (Vg/Ex), 10 Ruffing (Vg-Ex/Ex), 21 Ferrell (tiny flake of paper loss on the top edge, otherwise Ex), 27 Williams (PSA VG-EX 4; Popular second-year card, downgraded for two print marks on his face), 30 Berg (Vg-Ex), 38 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 40 Greenberg (Vg-Ex/Ex), 41 Gehringer (PSA VG-EX 4), 46 Averill (Ex), 87 Hubbell (Ex), 88 Ott (Vg), 102 Klein (Vg-Ex/Ex), 104 P. Waner (Vg-Ex/Ex), 105 L. Waner (PSA EX 5), 107 Vaughan (Vg-Ex), 118 Hoyt (no left border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 119 Alexander (Vg-Ex), 120 Johnson (Vg), 124 Combs (Ex-Mt), 129 Harris (Ex), 132 Mack (Ex), 133 Foxx (Vg), 134 Cronin (Ex-Mt), 141 Stengel (Vg-Ex), 142 Kelly (Vg), 153 McKechnie (Ex-Mt), 158 T. Jackson (Ex), 167 Frisch (Vg-Ex/Ex), 168 Wagner (PSA GOOD 2), 170 Speaker (Vg-Ex), 171 Heilmann (Ex), 172 Bender (Vg-Ex), 173 Lajoie (Vg-Ex), 174 Evers (Vg-Ex), 175 Mathewson (PSA EX 5), 176 Manush (Vg-Ex), 177 Baker (Ex), 178 Carey (Ex), 179 Sisler (Ex), 180 Cochrane (Vg), 223 Jennings (Vg), 224 Traynor (Vg), 225 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (PSA VG-EX 4, The card displays honest light corner wear, with a brilliant image, and centered slightly to the right), 226 Hooper (Ex), 227 Haines (Ex), 230 Faber (Vg), 232 Goslin (Ex), 234 Chance (Ex), 235 McGraw (Vg), 236 Bottomley (Vg-Ex), 237 Keeler (Vg-Ex), and 238 Lazzeri (Vg). The balance of the cards grade 80% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex overall), and 20% Vg. Technically the set falls into the "very strong medium" grade category, but has an overall presentation of a much more expensive and higher-grade set. Vintage sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing the most solid and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. Total 240 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
