1934 R304 Al Demaree Die-Cut #3 Earle Combs

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,645.00

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only "1 of 1" graded by PSA with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. Extremely rare R304 Demaree Die-Cut of Hall of Famer Earle Combs of the New York Yankees, issued by Chicago’s Dietz Gum Company in 1934. Demaree die-cuts are among the rarest of all 1930s gum issues. Their unusual design combines black-and-white photographic player portraits with cartoon body art drawn by former Major League pitcher Al Demaree (hence the name “Demaree die-cuts”). The fragile nature of all die-cut cards, and the easily broken tabs at the base of R304s that allow them to stand, make complete, high-grade examples all the rarer. This R304 Earle Combs has survived complete, with standup tab intact. Bright and clean, both front and back, the card presents at a glance as Ex-Mt, though very close examination at the proper angle reveals a very faint surface crease across Combs’ face, so light it's only detectable from the reverse. This is a magnificent example of one of the rarest of all Earle Combs cards, from one of the rarest and most condition-sensitive of all 1930s card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
