1923-1924 Tomas Gutierrez #14 Oscar Charleston

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $26,437.50

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Only one graded at this level with just two examples graded higher. Only 123 of these cards from this set have ever been graded by SGC or PSA. Tomas Gutierrez cards are among the most rarest of all tobacco issues. This 85-card set is the largest of the Cuban baseball card issues of the 1920s, and also one of the most popular. The cards were issued in Havana, Cuba, over a two year span from 1923 to 1924, for the Diaz Cigarettes brand. The set features many Negro Leagues players including Hall of Famers Oscar Charleston and Pop Lloyd. According to the backs of the cards, which are printed in Spanish, there is an album offer in exchange for a complete set of cards, which were not returned. It is this album offer which accounts in part for this issue’s incredible rarity. The album was an elaborate hardcover book with pre-printed pictures of each card from the set. Apparently the Tomas Gutierrez Tobacco Company thought that if a collector had the album, he no longer needed the actual cards, or maybe it was just too much trouble to return the cards. Offered is a high-grade example of Hall of Famer Oscar Charleston, the key card from the set, and one of Hall of Fame collecting's "dream cards." We've never held or even seen an Oscar Charleston from this set. This is an incredible card! Perfectly clean front and back, with evenly rounded corners, no major creases (a tiny corner crease in the upper left), and flawless picture quality. The back is bright and crisp with bold brown text and centered to the bottom right. The card has been downgraded by SGC due to a very small stain on the back, along the lower right edge, and otherwise has a solid Vg-Ex appearance. This is a very attractive and simply extraordinary key Hall of Famer rarity. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $26,437.50
