1921 E253 Oxford Confectionery Ty Cobb PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,818.75

Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only three examples graded at this level, with just three graded higher. Extremely rare caramel card of Ty Cobb issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania. This card has been harshly graded EX 5 by PSA. This is a very strong card that actually has an appearance bordering on Nr/Mt. This is the best E253 Oxford of Ty Cobb we have ever seen. Bright and clean. No creases. Square corners. The only reason this card is not graded higher (PSA 6 EX-MT or PSA 7 NR/MT) is due to the slightest hint of toning, barely detectible and of absolutely no consequence, on a small area of the reverse. This is a beautiful high-grade card and especially strong for Oxfords, which are printed on card stock that is particularly prone to wear. Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue, which features photos that are unique to this set. A complete twenty-card checklist appears on the reverse of each card. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This is an outstanding high-grade example of one of Ty Cobb's most distinctive and rare candy cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
