1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy #180 Hans Wagner

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00

Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Presented is a stunning high-grade E135 Collins-McCarthy card of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner. This is one of Honus Wagner's most desirable and rarely offered cards, especially in high grade. The image on this card is a unique batting pose of Wagner which appears only in the Collins-McCarthy set (and related issues). The 200-card black-and-white E135 set was issued in 1917 by the Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. of San Francisco. Its candy product was similar to Cracker Jacks. This was the company's only venture issuing cards of Major Leaguers. (Cards of Pacific Coast League players were issued by Collins-McCarthy for many years with the company's Zee Nut brand candy.) Unlike the somewhat similar 1916 M101-4/5 Sporting News set (with which the E135 set is sometimes confused because both sets are black-and-white and feature 200 cards), these cards were never issued as complete sets to the public, are much rarer, and are larger in size (measuring approximately 2 x 3.25 inches) than the smaller M101-4/5 cards. The E135 set was also produced on a slightly thinner stock that is far more susceptible to wear, and has a very glossy surface, which is very prone to creasing. This striking example of Wagner is perfectly bright and clean, with flawless contrast, a perfect surface, four sharp corners (a hint of wear in the lower left), and just a tiny spot of light toning after the "s" in "Nationals" (mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). Centered slightly to the top right. Decades ago a near perfect set of E135s surfaced. Most were kept together but a few of the big stars were separated. Judging from the incredible condition of this card, we would be surprised if this gem did not long ago originate from that legendary high-grade Collins-McCarthy set. This is a magnificent high-grade example of one of the most significant and rarely offered of all Honus Wagner cards, dating from the late teens, a time during which very few card sets were issued. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
