1916 Holmes to Homes Bread #86 Joe Jackson 1:1

Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $32,312.50

Addendum: It has come to our attention that this card was originally graded Excellent by a company with which we are unfamiliar called "PGA." This card was presented to us for auction graded "Good" by SGC, a grade that we believe is fair and accurate and takes into account all aspects of the condition of the card. An image has been provided to us of the card when it was graded Ex by PGA. It has been pointed out to us that it appears that the severity of a crease in the lower left corner has been pressed down to make it less prominent. After seeing a scan of the card in its PGA holder (then graded Ex) and knowing where to look, we can see the crease in the lower left. It is still there. After scanning the card with different settings, we believe that this crease was more prominent only due to the manner in which it was scanned when in its original PGA holder graded Ex, and that absolutely nothing was done to this card whatsoever to alter the card (which makes all the more sense as this crease does not impact the grade of the card). In retrospect, while we meant well, we jumped the gun, and we apologize. We are providing an image of the card when it was originally graded Ex by PGA. Please do not be confused by this extra image. The offered card is not graded Ex. It is offered encapsulated and graded Good by SGC.

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Only "1 of 1" graded by SGC with no other examples with Holmes to Homes advertising on reverse graded at any level by SGC. This Holmes to Homes Milk-Made Bread card #86 Joe Jackson is an extreme rarity. We have never before even seen a sample card from this incredibly rare set. Holmes to Homes Bread cards are very similar to M101-4/5 Sporting News. The M101-4/5 sets were issued as promotional vehicles for a number of regional businesses. While all of the M101-4/5 related issues have the same fronts, a variety of different regional advertisers can be found on their reverses (Globe, Gimbels, Weil Baking, etc.) in addition to the more common The Sporting News and blank-backed cards. The rarest of these various advertising backs is Holmes to Homes Bread. This Jackson card is one of ten newly discovered examples which were found in Virginia by a noncollector and sold to our consignor in 2007. Joe Jackson was the highlight card. Six other examples from the find are offered together as a separate lot. Until now, we have never even seen a single example of a Holmes to Homes card. The entire known population of samples from this set is probably no more than fifteen cards. (We have been able to verify the existence of only two others.) This is a very significant rare advertising-back example of one of Joe Jackson's most classic cards. The card has an Excellent appearance but has been downgraded to GOOD 30 by SGC due to minute faults, including the tiniest surface chip in the extreme upper right corner. Holmes to Homes cards (like all M101-4/5 related sets) have a glossy coated surface which is very susceptible to creasing. This card has a crease on Jackson's left leg and also another visible on the back through the "mes" in the word "Homes." The front is bright and clean. The image is bold and crisp. Three of the corners are square with light even wear. The fourth corner (upper right) is rounded. The printed advertisement for Holmes to Homes Milk-Made Bread on the evenly toned reverse is bold and crisp. This is a very attractive example of an extreme (almost certainly unique) rarity and would be a worthy addition to any world-class Joe Jackson or rare vintage baseball-card collection. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $32,312.50
