1914 E & S Publishing Co. Joe Jackson and Jimmy Archer Postcards (2)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75

Magnificent examples of the legendary “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and Jimmy Archer from the extremely rare E & S Publishing postcard set issued in 1914. This set of postcards is noteworthy both for its exciting design and great rarity. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC: Joe Jackson (VG/EX 50) and Jimmy Archer (GOOD 30). Fewer than a dozen players have been checklisted from this issue. The E & S Publishing set is one of the most distinctive postcard sets of the era. The fronts have a large portrait or action picture of the player in the center, surrounded by a number of smaller cartoons with short facts about the respective player. These two newly discovered examples are from an old-time postcard collector in the Midwest. He found these two over twenty years ago in a huge box of postcards and they were the only sports-related postcards in the box. He stored them away at the time and they have not seen the light of day since. This is the first Joe Jackson example we have seen in many years. Very few cards of Joe Jackson date from his playing days, so this rarely seen card has great significance to Joe Jackson collectors as well as to postcard and sample-card collectors. Each card is bright and crisp, both front and back, with no creases, and just the slightest hint of corner wear. Neither card has been mailed, and neither has writing on its traditional postcard reverse. The Jackson postcard has a spot of glue residue on the top edge of the reverse, which at one time was stuck to the front of the Archer postcard. The two were later separated, and as a result there is a small spot of paper loss on the top edge of the front of the Archer postcard. These are exceptionally rare and interesting cards. For what Joe Jackson cards from other sets sell for, this lot may be a sleeper. Both cards have an Excellent appearance. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
