1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Mike "King" Kelly

Starting Bid - $2,000.00 , Sold For - $9,987.50

Graded EX 60 by SGC. 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly with Boston (batting pose). This is one of the all-time classic nineteenth-century cabinet cards and one of the most impressive of all "King" Kelly cards. All Old Judge cabinets are extremely desirable, as are all examples of Hall of Famers, and Mike "King" Kelly is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. He was also nicknamed "$10,000 Kelly" after Chicago sold his contract for that amount to Boston following the 1886 season. At the time, $10,000 was an unheard of sum for a player but Kelly was so great and such a popular draw with fans that he was worth it. This is a stunning card, with player and team identification within the photo much more elaborate and prominent than on most Old Judge cabinet cards. The image on this card is very bold and with striking contrast. Extremely clean, both front and back. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of the nineteenth century's most legendary Hall of Famers from one of card collecting's most classic and revered sets. In Excellent condition. Disclosure Notice: This card has been consigned to this auction from the personal collection of SGC principle David Forman. Mr. Forman purchased this card in the open market at public auction, already graded, just as is the case with all five SGC-graded cards Mr. Forman is selling from his personal collection in this auction. This disclosure is being made at his insistence (and with our blessing) to avoid even the potential appearance of impropriety. In addition to SGC's lifetime written guarantees, which apply to all SGC graded cards, REA will allow the winner of any or all of the cards from Mr. Forman's personal collection a six-month full return privilege for any reason if desired. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000+. SOLD FOR $9,987.50
