1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Complete SGC-Graded Set (50)

Starting Bid - $1,500.00 , Sold For - $8,225.00

Complete set of 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders (fifty cards), all graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is an extremely attractive fairly high grade complete set of this classic tobacco issue. Most cards which are graded Vg or Vg-Ex appear Ex at a glance, and have been downgraded due to the minor flaws which are so common to the issue. The thin stock on which T201s are printed makes them especially susceptible to very light corner rounding and surface wrinkles. In the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are referenced from the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. The SGC grades are as follows: One NM 84: #48 Payne/Walsh (HOF). Five EX/NM 80: #8, 12 Byrne/Clarke (HOF), 13 Chance/Evers (HOF), 16, and 27. One EX+ 70: #18. Fourteen EX 60: #11 Brown/Hofman (HOF), 22 ("Nagy" collection), 31, 32 Gardner/Speaker (HOF), 33, 34, 36, 37, 40 Johnson/Street (HOF), 41, 42 Lake/Wallace (HOF), 46 McCarthy/McGinnity (HOF), 47, and 50 (last card in set). Sixteen VG/EX 50: #1, 2 Baker/Collins (HOF), 4, 5, 6 Bender/Oldring (HOF), 7 Bergen/Wheat (HOF), 9 Bresnahan/Huggins (HOF), 10 Mathewson/Bridwell (HOF; it is interesting to note that Mathewson's name is misspelled "Matthewson" on the front and correctly spelled on the back), 15 Cicotte/Thoney ("Black Sox"), 19, 21, 23 Dougherty/Lord, 25, 29, 43, and 44. Thirteen VG 40: #3, 14 Chase/Sweeney, 17 Crawford/Cobb (HOF), 20, 24, 26, 28 Lajoie/Falkenberg (HOF), 30, 35, 38, 39 Summers/Jennings (HOF), 45, and 49. Exceptionally crisp, clean, and attractive complete set of Mecca Double Folders, far superior to sets usually found. The technical SGC grades of the set are very respectable but as is often the case with T201s, this set clearly has a superior appearance to the assigned grades, almost to a card. This set has great eye-appeal! The T201 Mecca Double Folders set includes twenty Hall of Famers and is arguably one of the best values of all 1910 tobacco-card issues. The equivalent SMR value for just thirty-seven of the fifty graded cards (not including the thirteen VG 40s) is $7,685. Total 50 cards. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive of REA's internet software service provider. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $8,225.00
