Collection of 137 mostly 1910-era tobacco cards from eight different classic sets includes eighty-eight T206 "White Borders," eighteen T207 "Brown Background," five T210 Old Mill Cigarettes, two T211 Red Sun Cigarettes, two S74 Silks, two E90-1 American Caramels, one E90-2 American Caramel, and nineteen T211 Red Sun Pugilists. Mostly Piedmont and Sweet Caporal advertisement backs, but also includes examples of Broad Leaf 350, Hindu (Brown), American Beauty, El Principe De Gales, Cycle, Polar Bear, Old Mill, and Sovereign. Keys: Baker (Fr), two Brown/Wash. (both Fr), Chase/holding trophy (corners clipped, otherwise Ex), two Chase/dark cap (Vg and Gd), Clarke/bat (Vg/Vg-Ex), Evers/Chicago (Fr), Gandil/Black Sox (Vg-Ex), Kleinow/Boston (Vg-Ex), Lajoie/bat (Gd), McGinnity (Vg-Ex), Smith/Chicago & Boston (Gd), Tinker/bat on (Gd-Vg), Waddell/port. (Vg/Vg-Ex), and Wheat (Vg). Southern Leaguers: two Hart/Little Rock (both Gd-Vg), two LaFitte (both Vg), two Miller/Dallas (both Vg), Molesworth (Pr), Orth (Vg/Vg-Ex), two Paige (Vg and Gd), Perdue (Hindu back, Gd-Vg), and Thebo (Vg). 2) T207 (18 cards): all grade Gd to Vg: Bender (HOF), Blackburne (Cycle back), Bresnahan (HOF, it is interesting to note Bresnahan's name is misspelled "Bresnaham" on this card), Covington, Delahanty, Dooin, Evans, Ferry, Hallinan, Henriksen, Herzog (Cycle back), Hogan, Miller (Bklyn, Cycle back), Marquard (HOF), Morgan (Phil.), two Moriarity (both Cycle backs), and Mullin (no D" on cap variation). 3) T210 (5 cards): Dugey (series 3, Gd-Vg), Shindel (series 3, Vg), Thebo (series 3, orange borders, Vg-Ex), Campbell (series 4, Vg-Ex), and Crockett (series 7, Vg-Ex). 4) T211 (2 cards): Flood (top border clipped off) and Miller (Fr-Gd). 5) S74 (2 silks): Dooin and Ewing. Both grade Vg with paper backing still attached (Red Sun advertisement). 6) E90-1 American Caramel (2 cards): Donovan (Vg-Ex) and Tannehill/Chicago A.L. (Vg). 7) E90-2 American Caramel Pirates: Leach (Gd). 8) T211 Red Sun Pugilists (19 cards): condition ranges from Pr to Vg, averaging Good overall. Includes: Attell, two Baldwin, Brown, Burke, Coulon, Cross, Gardner, Griffin, Kaufman, Keyes, Marto, McGovern, Papke, Stewart, Willette, two Wolgast, and one other we cannot identify because the miscut on the bottom has cut the name off. The T211 of Attell is of special note to Black Sox collectors as Attell was well known as the "bagman" for gamblers in the 1919 World Series fix. This unusual and substantial assemblage was consigned to this auction by an old-time collector who put these cards aside literally decades ago. Total 137 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $9,400.00
