1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Roger Connor - Batting Pose Unique to N173

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $3,818.75

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Only "1 of 1" graded by PSA with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. Extremely rare and important card of Hall of Famer Roger Connor of the New York Giants (batting, outdoors backdrop scene) from the N173 Old Judge cabinet series. This is one of the most impressive and interesting of all Roger Connor cards. Most advanced Old Judge collectors will also notice that this pose of Connor is not particularly familiar to them, since it appears only in woodcut form in the Yum Yum tobacco and G & B candy card sets. This particular pose does not appear in the small N172 Old Judge set. It can only be found in the larger N173 cabinet series cards. Interestingly, a woodcut image of this pose of Connor was also used on the cover of an 1880s scorecard specifically advertising for Old Judge Cigarettes. Yet, despite its use on cards and advertisements as a woodcut image, this is the only card featuring a photograph of this pose of Connor. In addition, this also happens to be an extremely rare card among N173 Old Judge cabinets. We have never had another N173 of this Connor pose. All Old Judge cabinets are very desirable, as are all examples Hall of Famers. The fact that this is Roger Connor, one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers, and a pose unique to the N173 cabinets, make this a particularly interesting and significant card. The image is bold with strong contrast. The actual mounted photograph has a couple light moisture stains, but is otherwise in Excellent condition. The mount has some corner and edge wear, light soiling, and a few isolated spots of moisture staining. The reverse also has a few small areas of staining (mostly light but a small darker area in the lower left). Despite these faults, this is still a very attractive card, accurately graded, but with a very strong appearance. Old Judge cabinet cards have always been revered by collectors as among the most desirable of all pre-1900 issues. This is a very unusual and particularly noteworthy Hall of Famer example. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
