1911 D359 Rochester Baking Collection SGC-Graded (12)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $8,812.50

Collection of twelve D359 Rochester Baking cards (9 different out of 18 in the set), including two Hall of Famers, each graded by SGC: Chief Bender (HOF, FAIR 20), Eddie Collins (HOF, VG 40), Topsy Hartsel (FAIR 20), Jack Lapp (GOOD 30), two Paddy Livingston (GOOD 30 and POOR 10), two Bris Lord (VG 40 and FAIR 20), two Cy Morgan (VG 40 and GOOD 30), Danny Murphy (POOR 10), and Amos Strunk (FAIR 20). These cards are part of the Rochester, New York, collection which recently surfaced and was highlighted by an astounding thirty-six Clement Bros. Bread cards. The entire collection, which is presented in several lots in this auction, was saved by the father of our consignor, himself now an older gentleman. His family originally lived in Rochester, New York and his father personally got these cards in 1911. D359s are among the rarest of all 1910-era issues. This early bakery series was regionally issued only in the Rochester, New York, area circa 1911. Produced to commemorate the Athletics’ 1910 Championship season, the set features exclusively Athletics, including manager Connie Mack. Four different companies (Rochester Baking, Williams Baking, Cullivan’s Fireside Tobacco, and blank-backed versions catalogued as E104-1 Nadja) issued cards featuring the same portrait images of the Philadelphia Athletics. The cards measure 1-1/2 x 2-5/8 inches, which is the standard size for tobacco and candy issues, but are considerably rarer than most 1910-era “E” and “T” card issues. This is a very significant collection of these rare and distinctive prewar food cards. Total 12 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $8,812.50
