1910 E125 American Caramel Die-cuts New York Giants Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00

Collection of five newly discovered low-grade E125 American Caramel cards, each representing a player from the New York Giants (five out of eleven for a complete team subset), highlighted by only the second example known to date of the legendary Fred Merkle. This is low-grade group of these significant rarities, but still very interesting and desirable to many collectors. E125s tend to have all kinds of condition problems due to their fragile construction, so collectors are naturally a little more tolerant with this issue, though the problems are serious with these, and they will no doubt sell for a significant discount to Vg examples. (A grade of Vg for an E125 is the equivalent of an Ex or Ex-Mt card from most other sets of the era.) This collection of E125 Giants players was recently discovered and consigned to this auction by a noncollecting family in Mississippi. The two high-grade examples from the collection are presented separately as their own lot. The lot consists of the following: Red Ames, Al Bridwell, Fred Merkle (only the second example known to exist), Art Wilson, and Hooks Wiltse. Ames' outstretched arm is virtually detached but present; Bridwell and Wiltse are each missing one hand. All five cards are in Poor condition. Each has heavy water damage on the bottom flap which has resulted in paper loss, but most of the other portions of the cards are still relatively clean and present well. E125 die-cuts are among the rarest of all 1910-era candy issues. No full set is known to exist, and due to their considerable rarity, even the checklisting of the set is still a work in progress some ninety years after its issue. This is a presentable low-grade collection of five of these rare and unique 1910-era baseball diecut caramel cards. Total 5 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,410.00
