1910 E98 Anonymous "Set of 30" Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. This extremely rare E98 "Set of 30" candy card features Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson, one of the key cards from this highly elusive issue. The manufacturer of E98 is unknown. This rare caramel issue from 1910 may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E94 specifically); this is an entirely different set even though it uses many of the same subjects and poses. This is a very strong card, perfectly clean front and back, with four square corners, and a brilliant image set against a bright blue background. The back features the checklist for the set in crisp, bold brown print. Downgraded from Excellent due to a horizontal crease that runs across the card below Matty’s belt and a tiny stain near the upper left on the reverse. This card has outstanding eye appeal! Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. This is an outstanding and exceptionally attractive example of the legendary Christy Mathewson from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue, that displays far stronger than its technically accurate low grade. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
