1909-1911 T206 Walter Johnson - "Hindu" Back

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Classic T206 portrait pose of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson with the very scarce Hindu (brown) advertising reverse. Rare-back T206s are always popular but are of special note on those uncommon occasions when the card happens to be one of the keys in the set. That is certainly the case with this gem, as Walter Johnson's portrait card is one of the most popular of all T206 designs, and of all Walter Johnson cards. This card is graded VG 3 by PSA, but actually has an Excellent appearance. We were actually a little stumped when trying to understand the extremely harsh PSA grade, but eventually found that on the reverse are few extremely minor hints of horizontal lines of paper disruption relating to its having been stored in a particular type of photo album that was popular in the early and mid-1970s. The plastic overlay album pages had dozens of very fine horizontal lines of a slightly sticky application that allowed cards (or photos) to stay in place. If a card was in such an album for a long enough time and then removed, the horizontal lines could affect the card to a very minor degree. The "damage" to the reverse is so minor it can go unnoticed even when looking for it. This card is otherwise in Excellent condition! All VG cards should look so great! Well centered with no creases, with even wear to the four square corners, and with a perfectly clean reverse. We think that all T206 collectors would agree that Walter Johnson with a Hindu advertising back is one of the most noteworthy T206 rare-back combinations offered by the T206 set. This is the first example we can recall ever offering. Clean front and back. This is an extremely attractive Very Good example of this fascinating T206 rarity. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
