1909-1911 T206 White Border Partial Set (460 of 524)

Starting Bid - $5,000.00 , Sold For - $38,187.50

48% range in grade from Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex (includes some Ex and Ex-Mt, and Near Mint cards), 26% Vg, and 26% lesser (includes many cards which appear Ex but have a very slight trim). This partial set of T206 White Borders is comprised of 460 of the 524 cards in the set. The T206 set, of course, is also highlighted by literally dozens of Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson, as well as the scarce Southern League series. Although in mixed grade, this collection is extremely pleasing throughout, and includes many very highly graded cards, including two SGC NM 84 Hall of Famers, and an additional eight SGC NM 84 (or NM+ 86) commons, among other condition highlights. A case could be made that this collection should have been broken up into smaller groups by condition, but this is how our consignor has instructed us to offer it, presented exactly as he assembled it. With some upgrades this collection could easily serve as the foundation for an outstanding complete set. The partial set also includes the rare St. Louis variation of Demmitt (collectors are just beginning to appreciate how rare this card is, and it is often not included in sets) and the rare Elberfeld/port. (Wash). The sixty-four missing cards include Wagner, Plank, Magie, and Doyle (the "big 4"), as well as the following key cards (the balance are four Southern Leaguers and forty-five commons): Baker, Brown/Cubs, Crawford/batting, Dahlen/Brooklyn, Evers/Chicago, Gandil, Johnson/hands at chest, Joss/port., Kelley, Lajoie/bat, and O'Hara/St. Louis. This is a beautiful T206 partial set in a particularly desirable grade offering an exceptional value. The Hall of Famers and key cards are each graded individually. Fifty cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. Cards listed as trimmed all have a very subtle trim, almost all have an Excellent appearance, and individually and together are great assets to the lot. The key cards (including sixty-six Hall of Famers) grade as follows: Beckley (EX 60), Bender/no trees (EX/NM 80), Bender/trees (EX 60), Bender/port. (NM 84), Bresnahan/port. (Vg), Bresnahan/bat (EX 60), G. Brown/Wash. (trim), Brown/Chi. (NM 84), Brown/port. (EX 60), Collins/Minn. (Polar Bear, Pr), Crawford/throw (Pr), G. Davis (EX 60), Demmitt/St. Louis (GOOD 30. Bright and crisp, with two light horizontal creases across the middle, and perfect registration), Duffy (Vg), Elberfeld/port., Wash. (Gd/Vg), Evers/port. (EX 60), Evers/Cubs (Gd), Flick (Vg), Griffith/bat (trim), Griffith/port. (Vg-Ex), Huggins/hands (Pr), Huggins/port. (EX 60), Jennings/one hand (EX 60), Jennings/both hands (trim), Jennings/port. Seven NM 84: Camnitz (arms folded), Dougherty (glove in air), Hummel, Lake (St. Louis, ball in hand), Pfeffer, Stovall (batting), Warhop. Three EX/NM 80: Campbell, Kisinger, Mitchell. Eight EX+ 70: Batch, Clark, Graham, Hoffman, Mattern, Murray (port.), Starr, Young (Minn.). Two EX 60: Quinn and Wright. Impressive T206 cards ranging in grade from Vg to Excellent condition, of which this partial set is primarily comprised, represent one of the most outstanding values of all vintage cards. This set is very interesting also because very attractive trimmed cards have been sought, for the sake of economy, for many Hall of Famers, and while these cards are modest in value compared to problem-free cards, they look great and they still have substantial value. This is a beautiful partial set of T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic set of the era. Total 460 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $38,187.50
