1911 World Series/Christy Mathewson First Pitch Store Advertising Postcard

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $587.50

This uniquely designed composite photo postcard, issued as a promotional piece by a New York department store, commemorates the first game of the 1911 World Series between the Giants and Athletics held at the Polo Grounds. This is an extraordinary and exceptional advertising postcard rarity that we have not previously seen. The front of the postcard pictures a panoramic view of the Polo Grounds, taken from the perspective of the right field bleachers, as Christy Mathewson delivers the first pitch of the Series. Superimposed upon that central image are photos of the two starting pitchers for each club, Mathewson for the Giants and Chief Bender for the A’s, as well as a photo of Giants manager John McGraw and A’s manager Connie Mack shaking hands prior to the game. All of the players, as well as the game-in-progress scene are identified in print along the right border. The reverse features a printed advertisement for Hallock’s Department Store in Elmira, New York. The card has been addressed and mailed, bearing a postmark dated December 5, 1911. Mathewson defeated Bender 2-1 in Game One, but Bender and the A’s would have the last laugh. Bender went on to win his next two Series starts to lead the A’s to their second consecutive World Championship. The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches) displays light corner wear as well as a non-vintage ink mark on the reverse. Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+ SOLD FOR $587.50
