1910 Brush Automobile Advertising Postcards Collection Including Five Newly Discovered Cards (10)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $9,987.50

Collection of ten incredibly rare advertising postcards, highlighted by Ty Cobb, from the extremely fascinating but almost never seen Brush Automobile postcard set, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. In all our years we've had just a few samples from this important set. These cards are part of an advertising postcard set which was issued in circa 1910 by the Detroit-based Brush Automobile Company featuring Detroit Tigers players endorsing Brush automobiles. This is certainly one of the rarest and earliest sets ever produced which used ballplayers to prominently endorse and advertise a product. Only five cards were previously known and checklisted in The Standard Catalog. This collection includes the five subjects known to date in the set, and five newly discovered examples which are not listed in The Standard Catalog checklist. The collection includes the following: Cobb (EX 60), Coughlin (EX+ 70), Donovan (EX 60), Jennings (hands in air, VG/EX 50), Jennings (hands on steering wheel, EX 60), McIntyre (VG 40), Mullin (EX 60), Schaefer/O'Leary (VG/EX 50), Schmidt (EX 60), and Thomas (EX 60). The endorsement of the Tigers, including Ty Cobb, may not have hurt, but apparently wasn't enough to make the Brush brand a long-lasting success. Brush automobiles were produced only from 1907 to 1912. In addition to its great rarity, this set of postcards is also noted for its exciting design. Each card features an image of a player from the 1909 American League Champion Detroit Tigers posing with a Brush automobile, wearing a suit or uniform, with a poetic caption relating to the player. Cobb's caption reads: "Ty Cobb's the man who kills the ball/He won a pennant for us last fall." This is one of the most striking and certainly one of the rarest of all Ty Cobb cards. We would be surprised if more than five examples of any players from this set are known to exist. Each of the ten offered cards is bright and clean, both front and back, with perfect image quality, and just a little hint of corner wear. Each of the cards has never been mailed. These are exceptionally rare advertising cards, among the most interesting, substantial, and noteworthy product-related card sets ever issued. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Total 10 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $9,987.50
