1908 PC800 Pittsburgh Pirates Real-Photo Postcard SGC-Graded Collection Including Honus Wagner (5)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,997.50

Collection of five extremely rare 1908 vignette real-photo postcards issued in 1908, each depicting an individual member of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. This is a very unusual and distinctive set featuring only Pittsburgh Pirates players. The five players featured on the cards, respectively, are Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, Tommy Leach, Howie Camnitz, and Danny Moeller. Each postcard pictures the player in uniform and, with the exception of Clarke, also includes the player's last name, team, position, and year printed in white lettering within the body of the photo. It is interesting to note that Wagner's photo is slightly colorized, which was not an uncommon practice by real-photo postcard makers in this era, whereas the other players are pictured in standard black-and-white. This particular issue, designated "PC800," is distinguished by its irregular vignette photo borders and traditional divided postcard reverse. All of the cards have been professionally graded by SGC. The Leach, Camnitz, and Moeller cards each grade VG 40, while the Wagner and Clarke cards have been deemed authentic but have not received a numerical grade solely due to the fact that they have been mailed (and thus have writing and stamps on their backs). The Wagner card, which was saved for forty-one years before being used and is postmarked "Nov 12 1949," is in Very Good condition, with a few minor creases and a very small tear in the upper left corner that has been repaired with a small piece of brown tape on the reverse. The Clarke postcard is postmarked "May 13, 1908." The inscription on the back of the Clarke card is also dated "5-13-08" and includes the score of the Pirates game that day, "Pitts 5. NY 1." The card displays a very slight, barely detectable blind impression of Clarke's name, position, and team below his image (the writing appears to have been very successfully erased but has left the faintest impression visible only upon extremely close examination), otherwise in VG-EX condition. All of the cards, with the exception of the Wagner card, bear the ink-stamped name of "L.B. Coyle, Pittsburg, Pa." on the reverse. According to The Standard Catalog , L.B. Coyle was the publisher of the set. The Standard Catalog lists nine players as definitely known from the set, but notes that is is believed that the complete set is comprised of a total of fifteen cards, and that they were sold as souvenirs at Pittsburgh's Exhibition Field in 1908. Rare! Total: 5 postcards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $1,997.50
