1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug George Haddock - No Team on Shirt

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Pitcher George Haddock with no team name on shirt. This is a very interesting and noteworthy card in the Mayo set. Haddock's card was issued two ways: one with the team name Philadelphia on his shirt and the other identifying him with no team on his shirt. This is the rare variety. Haddock began the 1894 season with the Philadelphia Nationals, and finished the season with the Washington Nationals, before retiring from the majors after the 1894 season. This artwork on this card was revised after Haddock left Philadelphia. The fact that there is no team name at all, as opposed to lettering reading "Washington" added to his shirt, suggests that it was not clear what team he was on when the design of this card was revised, and that Mayo decided to include him in the set anyway without an assigned team affiliation. Very close inspection of Haddock's jersey on the "no team name" card reveals the slightest hint of several letters of the team name "Philadelphia," which has been removed from Haddock's shirt by Mayo. This card confirms that the N300 series was issued over two years (1894 and 1895). A single crease in the lower left corner, some edge and corner wear, and a little hint of clear glue on the reverse, still a very attractive card, especially for VG, with a strong image, clean surface and image, and perfect contrast. SGC and PSA population reports have not in the past properly broken out the Haddock "no team name" variation. We suspect that this variation of Haddock is particularly rare as we know that our consignor made great efforts over a period of many years to locate a higher-grade example for the set (this is the only card less than Vg-Ex in the entire set), but with no success. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
