1955 Topps Double Headers Complete SGC-Graded Set (66)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,818.75

Spectacular high-grade complete set of 1955 Topps Double Headers (sixty-six cards), all graded and encapsulated by SGC. This set was assembled from an extraordinary find in Canada years ago of several hundred 1955 Topps Double Headers that were at that time pulled directly from unopened packs. The corners on these cards are all sharp Nr/Mt-Mt to Mint, having gone straight from the packs directly into card sleeves. These cards have been harshly graded by SGC due to an occasional gum stain (they were issued in one-cent packs with one card and a piece of gum per pack) and the centering issues which are so common to the set. Most super high-grade 1955 Topps Double Headers are unperforated proof cards that do not fold and never saw packs. These are full production cards that were factory-issued in packs. It is rare to see corners this strong on cards from this set, even on proof cards. The grades on these cards really do not tell the whole story. They are bright, crisp, and incredibly fresh across the board. All sixty-six cards of this complete set have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The SGC grades are as follows: Ten NM 84: #15/16, 37/38, 65/66, 75/76, 77/78, 99/100, 101/102, 105/106 Aaron, 109/110 Newhouser, and 123/124. Twenty-seven EX/NM 80: #5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 17/18, 19/20, 27/28, 29/30, 33/34, 47/48, 49/50, 57/58, 63/64, 67/68, 71/72, 79/80, 83/84, 91/92, 93/94, 95/96, 103/104, 111/112 Killebrew, 117/118, 119/120, 121/122 Kluszewski, 125/126, and 129/130 Gilliam. Nine Ex+ 70: #23/24, 31/32 Banks, 51/52, 53/54 Amoros, 59/60, 81/82, 89/90, 115/116, and 131/132 (last card in set) . Sixteen EX 60: #1/2, 3/4 Irvin, 13/14, 21/22 Skowron, 25/26 J. Robinson, 35/36, 39/40, 43/44, 55/56, 69/70 T. Williams, 73/74, 85/86, 97/98, 107/108, 113/114, and 127/128 Spahn. Two VG/EX 50: #45/46 Kaline and 87/88. Two VG 40: #41/42 and 61/62. Double Headers are one of the scarcest and most unusual of all early 1950s gum issues. The design of the set was inspired by the T201 “Double Folder” set issued by Mecca Tobacco in 1911. When issued in packs, the cards were perforated horizontally, allowing for easy folding, so that each card could picture two ballplayers sharing the same legs. It is interesting to note that while Topps’ standard issue of 1955 was smaller in number than many other years at just 206 subjects, each of the 112 players appearing in the Double Headers issue (two players per card) also appears in the standard set. It is also interesting to note that the backgrounds of the cards, when placed side-by-side, form a continuous stadium background image. Double Headers were not aggressively promoted and were sold in very limited numbers. In addition, most of those that did make it into the hands of youngsters were damaged as they were folded and unfolded countless times, as intended. The cards in the offered set are straight from packs and have escaped all mishandling. This is one of the finest complete sets of 1955 Topps Double Headers in existence. Total 66 cards representing 132 players. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
