1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco Whitney

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,818.75

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Extremely rare and exceptionally crisp, clean sample card from the Yum Yum Tobacco series of 1888 features an extraordinarily bold "in action" woodcut of Jim Whitney, pitcher, with the Washington Nationals. 1887 was Whitney's first season with Washington, having spent most of his Major League career up to that season with the Boston Nationals. This is a tremendous Yum Yum Tobacco example, far better than most, and far superior in appearance to its assigned grade. The card has a strong Excellent appearance, with a bright, clean surface, tremendous contrast to the woodcut, no creases visible from the front, a single horizontal crease visible only from the reverse, and square corners with just the slightest hint of wear. We'd say that you couldn't ask for anything more of a Yum-Yum, but very close examination reveals a tiny blemish (possibly ink) by Whitney's left knee, and a hint of light staining apparently from water in the upper left corner of the blank reverse. Both of these minor flaws, in our opinion, are of little or no consequence in terms of the card's extraordinary visual appeal, but did impact the technical grade assigned by SGC. The card has an ever-so-slightly natural wavy cut which is not uncommon with Yum-Yums. This is a magnificent example from this rare issue. Advanced collectors have appreciated the mystique of the rarest pre-1900 baseball card issues for decades. Whether it is because of the brand name, their unusual look, extreme rarity, or a combination of all of these factors, few card issues command the respect that Yum Yum Tobacco cards do among the most serious collectors. It is always a privilege to offer a Yum Yum. This is a particularly attractive example. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
