1923 E123 Curtis Ireland Rube Marquard

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $822.50

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Highest-graded example! Exceedingly rare sample card of Hall of Famer Richard "Rube" Marquard from one of the rarest of all “E” card sets, catalogued E123, issued in 1923 by the Curtis Ireland Candy Company of St. Louis, MO. Identical in design to the V100 Willard Chocolate series, E123s measure 3-1/4 x 2-1/16 inches. The fronts feature a sepia-toned photo with the player's name in script. The elaborate advertisement on the back presents extensive text with details regarding a contest requiring collectors to mail in the cards in exchange for prizes, which is likely responsible in part for their great rarity. The card is perfectly clean front and back, with light, even wear on all four corners, no creases, and bold black printing on the reverse. This is an ideal sample card from this extremely rare set. Also included are three unique Curtis Ireland Candy Company documents, including one actually signed by Curtis Ireland, which are an ideal accompaniment to this rare card: a letter on Curtis Ireland stationery, signed by Curtis Ireland, to his nephew dated September 19, 1917; a 1917 Concessions Contract file copy form dated February 20, 1917; and a telegram from Curtis Ireland to a vendor dated September 18, 1917. Total 4 items (one E123 card and three documents). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $822.50
