1916-1920 W-UNC "Big Head" Strip Card Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $11,750.00

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Exceedingly rare example of the "Bambino" from the unusual 1916-1920 W-UNC “Big Head” Strip Card issue. This is the first example we have ever offered of one of Babe Ruth's rarest and most visually interesting cards. This unusual set is referred to as "Big Heads" because of its distinctive design featuring color artwork of players in full-body poses with impossibly large heads (Goudey “Heads-Up” style). The design of this issue gives it a distinctive character and charm, which has always been appreciated by collectors. Graded Vg-Ex by SGC, the card has a tiny border chip in the lower left and otherwise has an overall Excellent appearance. The card is blank-backed and measures 1-3/8 x 2-1/2 inches. Few cards of Ruth date from the earliest days of his Hall of Fame career. The set is believed to have been issued somewhere between 1916 and 1920, making this one of the earliest of all Babe Ruth cards and one of the few dating from his days with the Boston Red Sox. This is the key card from one of the rarest issues of the era. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,750.00
