1911 M116 Sporting Life Blue Background Uncut Panels (4) Including Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,232.50

Extremely rare and unusual (possibly unique) collection of four uncut panels, each with three cards, from the 1911 M116 Sporting Life “Blue Background” series, highlighted by Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Honus Wagner. These four panels represent half the set of the “Blue Background” series: Panel 1 - Wagner/Cobb/Dooin, Panel 2 - Bender/Mathewson/Collins, Panel 3 - Jennings/Chance/Davis, and Panel 4 - Doyle/McQuillan/Chase. We believe these panels were either once part of an unknown advertising display, remnants from an uncut sheet that was long ago cut up, or printer’s scrap saved from the trash by someone who had something to do with the printing of the cards. The panels are technically in Poor to Fair condition, but are very interesting and display much better than suggested by their technically accurate extremely low grade. The middle cards (Cobb, Mathewson, and Chance) of all three panels are relatively clean with no major condition flaws. These panels have been in an old-time collection since the 1970s. The cards have blank backs and are printed on a stock which is considerably thicker and sturdier than normal individual M116 cards, strongly suggesting to us that it is most likely that these cards were long ago cut from an advertising display, of which no complete examples have survived. M116 Sporting Life are one of the most significant and highly collectible issues of the 1910 era. Total 4 panels (three cards per panel for a total of 12 cards). Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,232.50
